The series D.Gray-man takes place in a fictional version of 19th century Europe, and it follows the story of Allen Walker and his friends (one of them is Lavi). The world is under attack by sinister beings known as akuma, servants of the Millennium Earl and his family. Allen joins a special organization known as the Black Order to help people known as exorcists fight the Earl and prevent the destruction of the world. The exorcists are those who possess a unique material known as Innocence that gives them special powers to fight akuma. Allen, Lavi and the other exorcists must fight akuma while searching for more Innocence in order to keep the Earl from getting it and give more people a chance to become exorcists. The manga is classified as a gothic action Shounen series. There is also an anime adaptation of the series. For more detailed information, I suggest reading the Wikipedia article.

Lavi is a red-haired exorcist of mixed race with a green left eye, an eyepatch over his right eye, and a distinctive headband. He is 18 years old and tends to be quite mischievous. He is to be the successor to the current Bookman, and so he is working with the Black Order in order to be close to the events that are unfolding in the battle against the Earl. Little is known about his past, although "Lavi" is not his real name. There are many variations of his name (Lavi, Ravi, Labi, Rabi) but for the sake of simplicity, he is referred to only as Lavi on this site as it seems to be a common translation.

Lavi's Innocence is a unique equipment-type weapon in the form of a hammer. He calls his weapon "Odzuchi Kodzuchi," () which means "big hammer small hammer" due to its ability to change size when he wills it. He can cause the handle to extend by using the command shin (), and he can make the hammer grow in size by using the command man (). In addition, there are several elemental summon attacks known as "judgements." When using these attacks, a circle of kanji seals representing the elements appears around the hammer and Lavi may choose one or more to create his attack. Some of the seals appear as question marks, so it is likely that these are attacks that he has not yet mastered. His known techniques are listed below:

Hi Ban: Gouka Kaijin ( lit. Fire Seal: Conflagration of Ash): using the fire seal to create a torrent of flames with the form of a snake.
Ten Ban: Raitei Kaiten ( lit. Heaven Seal: Thundering Lightning Whirling in the Skies): using the heaven seal to liberate an immense lightning.
Moku Ban: Tenchi Bankai ( lit. Wood Seal: Roots Entwining Heaven and Earth): using the wood seal to control objects in nature.
Konbo Ban: Gouraiten ( lit. Combo Seal: Strong Thunder of the Heavens) :using both fire and heaven seals to create a huge snake of fire and iron.
